Mares carry their young, called foals for approximately 11 months from conception to birth. Usually just one young is born; twins are rare. When a domesticated mare foals, she nurses the foal for at least four to six months before it is weaned, though mares in the wild may allow a foal to nurse for up to a year. They may have calmer temperaments than horses and also a high level of equine intelligence that may or may not be used to cooperate with human handlers.

During the latter half of the century various horse breeds were imported into the Cape and the republics, and probably these horses could have had some influence on the Boer horse, but more so in the Cape than in the northern regions. The aids for halting a horse are a combination of legs, hand and seat. To ask the horse to halt from the walk, stiffen the lower back and at the same time squeeze gently with the legs whilst stiffening the hands and gently pulling the reins back towards your body.
